Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Associate General Counsel – Litigation and General University Affairs for the Office of General Counsel (OGC). This position reports to the Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsels. The position works in a variety of areas, with a focus on overseeing and supervising the defense of the university and its employees in litigation and providing advice, counsel, and representation on a broad array of issues and matters facing the university.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Defending the University on a wide variety of litigation matters (a substantial portion of which involves employment cases), typically in coordination with outside counsel.
Advising senior administrators on matters in anticipation of litigation and preparing responses to attorney demand letters and complaints filed with administrative agencies such as the EEOC and DCR; collaborating with University Risk Management on insurance, indemnification and related issues.
Providing advice and counsel on a wide variety of legal issues that affect a public institution of higher education, including constitutional issues, issues arising under Title IX, FERPA, the Open Public Records Act, the Open Public Meetings Act, and other student-related issues (such as discipline and disability accommodations); providing advice and guidance pertaining to drafting and reviewing University-wide policies and procedures.
Analyzing and evaluating pending legislation and regulations to determine if they apply to the University and, if so, their impact on the University; collaborating with the Department of External affairs in developing and advancing the University's interests and positions in response to pending legislation and regulations.
Participating in other legal projects as requested by the General Counsel or other supervising attorneys.
Minimum Education and Experience:
JD degree from an accredited law school.
A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience of increasing responsibility, with significant knowledge and experience in employment litigation and general litigation, in both state and federal court.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent communication skills, excellent writing skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and collegially with colleagues both within the OGC and within the University as a whole.
Comfortable taking responsibility for addressing complex legal issues within the context of a vibrant and ever-evolving institution of higher education.
Strategic decision-making and independent sound judgment as applied to complex and nuanced factual scenarios.
Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple and changing priorities and objectives.
Experience representing public and/or private institutions of higher education or working as in-house counsel at an institution of higher education.
Experience representing public sector clients in New Jersey.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Admitted to practice law in New Jersey or admitted in another jurisdiction and willing and able to become admitted in New Jersey as soon as practicable (but not more than one year after hire).
