The Role Responsibilities
Lead the management of non-contentious financial services regulatory-related Legal matters across the Group's global network, with overall responsibility for providing strategic legal advice, guidance and support to stakeholders across the Group on financial services legislation, regulatory reforms involving domestic and international regulators and standard setters and other regulatory-related Legal matters.
Maintain close relationships with stakeholders including business and product heads, internal Legal Heads, Compliance, Risk, Group Public & Regulatory Affairs (GPRA) etc in order to provide them with relevant legal advice, guidance and support arising from material laws and regulations.
Anticipate, lead and proactively provide legal advice and assistance in relation to regulatory-related projects, initiatives and Transactions.
Develop thought leadership capability - as demonstrated by visibility within the Group, and externally (in the industry) as a senior point of contact for regulatory-related consultation.
Promote the culture and practice of compliance with legal standards (including conducting business within legal and regulatory requirements, and to high ethical standards) within the Bank and embed a Here for Good culture and the Group Code of Conduct.
Lead and proactively provide strategic regulatory-related legal advice particularly with respect to financial services and bank regulatory legislation involving domestic and international regulators and standard setters.
Act as lead lawyer for interpreting new and existing laws, rules and regulations, and advise on changes which may impact business and product lines, complex multi-jurisdictional transactions, collaborating with business and product heads, internal Legal Heads, Compliance, Risk, GPRA etc to provide seamless support to business.
Build and maintain an effective and constructive relationship with all key business and functional stakeholders that is based on trust, capability and integrity, providing timely, responsive and quality support to enable the Bank to achieve its strategic objectives.
Work across the Legal function to develop simple, effective new processes where needed, to refine legal advice, processes, outputs and products which impact business and product lines.
Facilitate adequate management MI / trackers across all aspects of regulatory legal coverage and responsibility to ensure activity is tracked, followed, regularly assessed and reported on.
Develop a model to facilitate and extrapolate data from engagements with external regulators, Compliance, Risk, GPRA etc in a uniformed fashion.
People and Talent
Engage relevant stakeholders in key business, product and functional teams as well as within internal Legal at Group, regional and country level to obtain continuous feedback.
Provide input at business, function, country and individual level as appropriate on legal matters which may have a bearing on remuneration pools or individual bonuses as required.
Report to and participate in key risk control committees and management groups on relevant legal risks and issues.
Represent Legal in the governance of regulatory-related issues by endeavouring to ensure that any papers which relate to regulatory-related Legal matters being tabled at Board, Court, Group or Bank governance committees or product NFRCs have been reviewed and clearly articulate the issues and legal risks involved.
Manage the provision of reports to relevant Group and business risk and control committees and management groups on key regulatory-related legal risks and issues.
Ensure the effective management of regulatory legal matters across Legal
Have an awareness and understanding of the regulatory framework in which the Group operates, and the regulatory requirements and expectations relevant to the role
Assume responsibility for delivering effective governance of Legal agenda

Work with local regulators (when required to do so) in an open and cooperative manner.
Within the Group's overall Risk Management Framework, establish and maintain an appropriate risk-based approach to assessing, measuring, monitoring, managing and reporting Legal Risk arising from arising from material laws and regulations.
Maintain an awareness and understanding of the top risks facing the Group and the role played in managing them.
Ensure proactive and timely identification, dissemination and advice of evolving external political and regulatory changes/practices and associated risks, with proactive engagement across key business, product and functional teams as well as within internal Legal to anticipate horizon risks that may have a significant impact on the Bank.

Perform other responsibilities assigned under Group, Country, Business or Functional policies and procedures.
Ensure close coordination with the Legal Dispute Resolution Team and Group Special Assets Management for their input, where relevant, into litigation cases concerning regulatory matters.
Where external counsel is appointed, work closely with external counsel to ensure the scope of work is defined and appropriate, the quality of work is overseen effectively, legal costs are managed, and that there is appropriate overall matter management
Our Ideal Candidate
Qualified to practice as a solicitor/attorney or barrister/advocate.
Substantial legal experience in providing strategic advice and interpretation on legal initiatives, legislative and regulatory reforms in private practice or in-house
Experience in leading complex legal assignments with a high level of business impact to deliver appropriate solutions. (such as interpretation of new legislation or regulation(s) necessary to align across business and product teams, product and process changes that are multi-jurisdictional)
Deep knowledge and familiarity with financial services legislation and regulatory reform on full range of international requirements facing today's highly regulated financial services institutions
Sharp business acumen (including ability to assess risk and appropriate levels of return), strong leadership qualities, excellent interpersonal skills and multi-cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Understanding of risk management techniques.
Sound judgment of business practices, regulatory relationship management and reputational risk.
Exemplary integrity, ethics, independence and resilience.
Personal authority with proven ability to establish relationships and provide strong direction at senior levels of the business and the Group, and with external stakeholders.
