The University of Cincinnati’s Office of General Counsel is seeking a Senior Assistant General Counsel. This position will report to the Vice President of Legal Affairs and General Counsel or designee and will support the Office of Research and all areas of operation, instruction, research and administration at the University. The Office of General Counsel is a fast-paced, high-volume environment that provides legal services to the entire University. The successful candidate will provide, manage and coordinate quality legal services including legal counsel, representation, and advocacy to the University. As an Assistant Attorney General, these services may be performed in collaboration with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. The preferred candidate will have significant experience providing legal advice and counsel to an institute of higher education and effectively advising a sophisticated client base.
The Office of the General Counsel supports the dynamic educational environment of the University of Cincinnati by providing legal advice to support all areas of operation, instruction, research and administration at the University.
Attorneys in the Office of General Counsel provide, manage and coordinate quality legal services including legal counsel, representation, and advocacy to the University.
As an assistant attorney general, these services are often performed in collaboration with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
Attorneys are expected to provide high-level legal advice, counsel and advocacy to the University in a variety of areas including, but not limited to, labor and employment, student-related matters, contract review and negotiation, public procurement, compliance, privacy, public records, constitutional law, real estate, transactional matters, gifts and development, administrative law, and research-related matters such as ethics, compliance and contracting.
Work under the general supervision of the Vice President of Legal Affairs & General Counsel (or her designee).
Provide, manage and coordinate high-quality legal services including legal counsel, representation, and advocacy to the University on multiple unrelated matters rapidly, accurately, and effectively in a high-volume, fast paced environment consistent with the expectations of the General Counsel or her designee, University stakeholders, and the Ohio Attorney General.
A Senior Assistant General Counsel in the Office of General Counsel should work closely and collaboratively with other members of the Office of General Counsel, administrators, and faculty, and other stakeholders.
Ability to effectively communicate, work cooperatively and interact comfortably with a diverse community and multiple constituencies including senior administrators, staff, faculty, students, trustees, external professionals and vendors.
Excellent oral and written communications skills.

Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a high-pressure environment.
Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations and to meet deadlines.
Manage outside counsel, interact with other governmental offices, and collaborate with University-affiliated organizations all in a manner that prioritizes the University’s interests.
Ability to work mostly independently with minimal to moderate level of supervision and to take initiative when appropriate.
Have a physical presence on main campus, regional campuses, at governmental or quasi-governmental agencies and in court to serve as a representative of the Office of General Counsel and the University with a highest degree of integrity and ethics.
A Senior Assistant General Counsel must at all times exercise sound judgment, act with the highest degree of honesty and integrity and demonstrate the utmost discretion.
A Senior Assistant General Counsel must comply with all legal and ethical rules applicable to an attorney licensed and practicing in the State of Ohio.
Supervise or lead a team or unit or significant function within the Office of General Counsel.
Perform other duties as assigned by the General Counsel or designee and perform other related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time by the General Counsel or University.
J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school
Eight (8) years or more of directly relevant experience as a practicing attorney
Meet the qualifications for appointment as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio.
Licensed to practice and in good standing in the State of Ohio or licensed to practice and in good standing with another state, and awaiting Ohio Supreme Court approval of an Application for Admission to the Practice of Law in Ohio Without Examination, which must be approved within eight months of Application.
Eight (8) years or more of directly relevant experience as a practicing attorney.
Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and collaborate on a team while advising diverse stakeholders in a high-volume environment.
Strong legal research, analytic, and oral/written communication skills.
Sound judgment, high ethical standards, discretion and integrity.
Demonstrated skill set necessary to supervise or lead a team or significant function.
A commitment to diversity and the ability to work with divergent personalities.
Additional Qualifications Considered:
Four or more years of experience practicing law for an institute of higher education or other Ohio public entity.
