The County of Alameda’s Office of the County Counsel is seeking an attorney to join a collegial team of attorneys and staff committed to providing excellent legal services. The County Counsel is the General Counsel for the County of Alameda, including the Board of Supervisors and all County agencies and departments, certain special districts, boards and commissions. Just as a large company utilizes its in-house counsel, the Office of the County Counsel’s clients rely on the office for the full range of legal services, covering a broad spectrum of practice areas. The Office’s 42 attorneys handle a variety of civil litigation, including employment, personal injury, child welfare, breach of contract, civil rights, taxation, election challenges, probate/conservatorship, and land use, in addition to oversight of litigation handled by outside counsel. We provide th e day-to-day advice and counsel expected from any in-house attorney in the above fields and many others, while also drafting local and statewide legislation, negotiating and drafting contracts and other legal agreements, and as the County employs almost 10,000 workers, we have a robust employment law practice.

The Office of the County Counsel is seeking highly talented, highly motivated, fast learners to fill open attorney positions. We have one true vacancy currently but may be flexible in filling the vacant position at an Assistant County Counsel, Senior Deputy County Counsel or Deputy County Counsel level based upon the breadth and scope of experience of the applicant pool. At a minimum, five years of experience will be required at the Deputy County Counsel level.
The best candidates will minimally meet the following qualifications:
Member in good standing with the State Bar of California
Ability to prioritize and manage several simultaneous projects under deadlines
Flexible and eager to learn notwithstanding an excellent track record of legal experience
Self-motivated and willing to take ownership of any matter
Exceptional legal research and writing skills
Strong communication skills. Demonstrated ability to explain complex legal issues to judges, arbitrators, elected officials, and a diverse range of clients
Able to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with other County staff
Ability to practice at the highest level of ethics and professional responsibility.

The County offers a salary that is competitive with other local government law offices in Alameda County, California. Salary ranges run from a low of $157,880 annually at the bottom of the Deputy County Counsel range to a high of $268,070 at the top of the Assistant County Counsel range.
