Royal Oak is a council-manager form of government. The City Attorney position is appointed by the city commission. Commission is comprised of six commissioners and a mayor elected at large on a non-partisan ballot. Commission meetings are held the second and fourth Monday evenings of the month.
The City Attorney position offers a unique opportunity for an individual who can provide clear, impartial counsel, while being fully engaged in advising the city commission on how its policy objectives can be achieved. The City Attorney works closely with the City Manager and department heads on maters vital to the City’s day-to-day operation and future goals. As the chief prosecutor for the City, the City Attorney must have an appreciation for the work of the Royal Oak police department and work closely with the Chief to develop a clear and consistent law enforcement expectations.
The office of the City Attorney includes the city attorney, chief assistant city attorney, assistant city attorney and a legal administrative assist. The budget for the department is $644,000. The City Attorney office attends city commission meetings; prepares, reviews, and approves all contracts and other legal documents; prosecutes all violations of City ordinances, represents the City in all legal proceedings; and performs any other duties the commission shall prescribe.
Candidates are required to have:
A Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school and be admitted to and in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan, or able to become a member within six months following the start of employment with the City. The City Attorney must be licensed to practice law in the United States Federal Court, Eastern District.
At least seven (7) years of successful experience as a practicing attorney, with knowledge of civil and criminal law. The city, at its discretion, may consider an alternative level of work experience.
Experience in a municipal law setting or advising municipalities.
The position will execute an employment agreement with the city commission. The starting salary will be in the range of $130,000 to $145,000, DOQ/E. The City also offers a generous benefit package.
