Talent Management - Manage practice groups' staffing to optimize timekeeper utilization, experience, and service including being available on short notice to handle emergency staffing requests and needs
- Manage practice groups' hiring to optimize client-service, utilization, and profitability
- Advance the Firm’s Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) goals, especially in the hiring and retention of diverse talent and the allocation of work assignments
- Involvement in Associate and Paralegal evaluation processes and regularly solicit partner feedback regarding associate and paralegal performance
- Encourage and support Associate professional development, training, and mentoring, including encouraging and assisting Associates and Partners in “investment time” activities, working with Administration to manage CLE compliance and cost, be responsible for calendaring both individuals to present training and topic selection
- Review and offer assistance in developing and implementing Personal Plans
- Cultivate an atmosphere of positive morale, teamwork, and client-service
- Advance the practice groups’ goals of retention (and, where necessary, managed attrition)
- Assist with and work to clear ethical conflicts, coordinating with the Firm’s General Counsel and coordinating with individual attorneys inside and outside the practice groups to obtain conflict waivers
- Responsible for all aspects of the LEG and TAP summer associate evaluations, recruiting and selection (which would include identifying mentors, project developers, graders, etc. and obtaining feedback from partners as to candidate selection)
Practice Group Operations - Develop and manage a robust meeting calendar with agendas to improve communication and advance the objectives of the practice groups
- Regularly and consistently communicate with the practice groups regarding business, initiatives, talent, innovation, clients, completed matters, and operations
- Assist with day to day practice groups’ operations, such as expenditure approvals
- Assist in improving attorneys’ financial hygiene (timely timekeeping, billing, and collections)
- Provide regular reports to and meet with the PGLs and the Chair
- Coordinating experience database capture and maintenance
- Work with accounting to establish annual rate adjustments
- Participation in contingency case presentation and approvals and monthly monitoring of contingency case performance with a summary at the conclusion of the outcome and any takeaways
- Work with administration as to the physical office locations and moves
Client Relationship Management and Development - In each case in collaboration with the BD Department, manage client feedback programs specific to the practice groups to promote client satisfaction and implement internal improvements indicated; e.g., identifying at-risk clients and business within the practice groups and proactively engaging with relevant attorneys and clients
- Cultivate business opportunities in collaboration with the BD Department, including identifying targets and participating in client-facing meetings, as requested; research and stay aware of a) trends in litigation and labor litigation to provide guidance about areas of litigation that we should be developing; and b) conditions in each of our geographies that are promising for expanding our practices
- Collaborate with the BD Department in presenting the practice groups’ public image
- Assist the practice groups’ activities within the Firm’s Client Continuity Program
- Assist and collaborate with the BD Department in RFP “go/no go” decisions and responses
- Work with BD on Chambers’ information gathering and attorney selection
Strategy & Innovation - Identify ways to innovate in the delivery of the practice groups’ services to enhance client satisfaction and practice groups’ profitability; e.g., innovation in staffing, innovating use of technology, improving knowledge management, etc.
- Enhance the practice groups’ ability to price on a non-hourly basis by improving the practice groups’ approaches to budgeting, work-scoping, and matter-level financial management
