The Law and Economics Center (LEC) is searching for a Director, External Relations and Strategic Initiatives. About the Center The LEC of the George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School is a national center for research and education that focuses on the timely and relevant economic analysis of legal and public policy issues. To fulfill its education mission, the LEC provides dynamic training programs in law and economics to audiences including federal and state judges, state attorneys general, congressional staff members, academics, and other legal professionals.
Responsibilities: The Director, External Relations and Strategic Initiatives will develop and maintain relationships with partner organizations and individuals, while also crafting and managing strategic initiatives to advance the Center goals. The ideal candidate will plan and effectively execute multiple projects through an ever-changing environment. This person has a keen sense for meeting both Center objectives and those of both internal and external stakeholders. This candidate will work collaboratively across all LEC divisions and leadership (Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director, and Chief of Staff) to plan and organize educational programs for a variety of audiences, engage in regular and active recruiting efforts to fill programs with participants, run on-site programming in coordination with events staff and other program staff, perform marketing and recruiting activities, and build relationships with potential audience members, supporters, and subject matter experts. This position will work closely with senior leadership to cultivate and manage donor and potential donor relationships.
Required Qualifications: The Director, External Relations and Strategic Initiatives must possess a J.D. (or foreign equivalent) or a Ph.D. in economics or government, 10 years applicable experience in legal and public policy arena, able to demonstrate a keen understanding of legal and public policy issues, and have an appreciation for the powers and duties of state attorneys general, solicitors general, regulatory officials, and judges. Expertise in emerging civil justice issues and some familiarity with law and economics as a field of study is particularly valuable.
Candidate must have: - Established track record of administering relationship building campaigns, including strategic planning;
- Excellent organizational and management skills, including the ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities effectively;
- Excellent computer, recordkeeping and database management skills;
- Professional demeanor and ability to interact with all levels of legal, academic, and governmental officials;
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, able to speak in front of large and small audiences.

- Detail-oriented;
- Work effectively in a fast paced, quality and goal driven work environment;
- Team-focused, enjoys working as part of an active group of highly engaged individuals, sharing information readily with co-workers, and listening to and respecting others.
The Director, External Relations and Strategic Initiatives position will require a willingness to participate in occasional weekend and evening programs and social events.
