We make software that anyone can mold and shape to take on every challenge — from taking personal notes to running large companies. We've been building together since 2016 and are trusted by customers including Nike, Airbnb, Slack, Samsung, and more. We're excited to be growing a team as diverse and creative as the millions of people we reach worldwide, and a company where everyone can thrive.
About The Role:
Providing software that can be molded to fit an incredible variety of uses and applications to our expanding customer base presents unique legal opportunities. As our Lead Commercial Counsel, you would be one of the first members of Notion’s Legal Team. You will have the chance to build the commercial legal foundation to help Notion meet its ambitious goals. We are looking for a team member who is excited about our passionate user base and is interested in joining a dedicated cross-functional team that engages with our customers and vendors.
This role will be based in our San Francisco office. However, under current circumstances, remote work is being accommodated in order to comply with safety measures.
What You'll Do:
Own broad responsibility for Notion’s commercial legal matters and serve as the primary point of contact for inbound and outbound commercial contracting issues
Provide practical day-to-day and strategic advice to the sales, marketing, and success teams
Develop and implement efficiencies in the self-service and the commercial negotiation processes and contract lifecycle management in collaboration with sales and finance team leadership
Develop and revise contract templates as necessary, based on changes in the product offerings, organization, and/or applicable law
Develop education, information, and training materials for the sales organization on relevant topics such as the contracting process, key contract issues, data privacy, and legal compliance in the sales and contracting processes
Provide strategic advice on design, implementation, and evolution of commercial partnership programs and associated agreements
Collaborate cross-functionally across the organization to ensure agreements are consistent with internal policies and processes
Advise internal clients regarding legal issues including identifying, managing, and communicating risks and opportunities in commercial transactions
Structure, draft, and build processes for the negotiation of a broad range of inbound supplier agreements including software and SaaS, professional services and outsourcing, IT infrastructure, and marketing and advertising technology
Ability to manage external and internal resources to help with the execution of all of matters above
What We're Looking For:
A Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the California bar or ability to be registered as in-house counsel in California
8+ years of combined experience practicing as a technology transactions or commercial attorney within a law firm and software technology company
Deep subject matter expertise in commercial transactions, SaaS, and enterprise B2B transactions
Knowledge of privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA, etc.) and the ability to incorporate and revise those evolving requirements into the customer facing agreements
Desire to help cross functional teams build scalable processes to contract with our customers and vendors
Excellent drafting, written and verbal communication skills and ability to adapt legal requirements in balanced, creative and pragmatic ways to facilitate clear and open communication at all levels of the organization
Ability to directly interact with, and build mean relationships and trust, with internal and external clients and leaders
Resilience, resourcefulness, and the ability to make recommendations and decisions with imperfect facts
Independent and strategic thought combined with excellent team player qualities (no job is too small or too large) and a willingness to take on additional responsibilities
NOTES:
Employer will assist with relocation costs.
