Provide advice on organizational legal and compliance issues. Serve as the in-house counsel for MABE. Update school board members and school system staff regarding pertinent school policies, laws, and cases. Conduct trainings on school law and policy. Research current regulations, laws, and cases affecting school boards and school systems. Collaborate with other state association colleagues to identify best practices, policies, and resources. Provide leadership on organization’s legal strategy and policy priorities. Provide legal and policy direction to the organization on a range of issues including but not limited to general corporate, contract, and personnel matters. Administer the Legal Services Association Serve as liaison to MABE committees as requested by Executive Director. Manage legal brief writing and litigation. Provide guidance, substantive legal analysis, and writing on regulations and legislation, including white papers, testimony, and op-eds
Juris Doctorate degree (required). 5-10 years’ experience in a legal policy role; knowledge of Maryland school law preferable. Law degree from an accredited U.S. law school; active bar membership or ability to activate by start date. Substantial policy and/or regulatory experience. Sophisticated understanding of the influences in the legal, legislative, and regulatory processes. Ability to counsel senior management, including the ability to clearly and succinctly communicate risks on legal matters and policies. Sound judgment and ability to analyze situations and information. Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Meticulous work ethic, problem solver, and critical thinker with the ability to prioritize responsibilities.
