In light of the upcoming retirement of the current Executive Director of this non-profit organization, the Coalition is seeking a person to fill this role, on a part-time basis. The Executive Director is the most critical position in the organization, tasked with developing and implementing strategic plans that promote diversity and inclusion within the Pittsburgh legal community, overseeing all aspects of the organization, and working closely with and reporting directly to the Board of Directors.
More specifically, the responsibilities and duties of the Executive Director are as follows:
Develop and implement strategic plans that align with the Coalition’s vision, mission, and goals in partnership with the Board of Directors.
Develop annual budgets and manage operations within approved budgets.
Communicate effectively with the Board to ensure that it has all information necessary to function properly and make informed decisions.
Enlist the Board’s input and support in policy decisions and promoting the Coalition’s visibility in both the legal and broader community.
Develop and administer financial and other policies and procedures.
Develop positive relationships with the Coalition’s members and other stakeholders and community organizations, leveraging those relationships to strategically enhance the Coalition’s mission.
Develop commitment to the Coalition’s goals among current members and attract new members.
Energize and engage volunteers who serve on the Coalition’s standing committees (Recruitment, Retention, and Community Building), as well as on other ad hoc committees and task forces, or who may be speakers or panel members at Coalition programs.
Work with the Board of Directors and the committees to develop a strategy for recruiting attorneys of diverse backgrounds to Pittsburgh, and to then implement that strategy.
Work collaboratively with the Coalition’s part-time Communications Director to produce a monthly newsletter and other communications.
Review and negotiate contracts for services.
Develop presentations and programs as appropriate to support the Coalition’s goals and expand its reach.
Serve as a resource to Coalition members on questions regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Serve as a leader and problem-solver in the field of diversity and inclusion both in the Pittsburgh legal community and in the broader Pittsburgh community.
Enhance the profile of the Coalition and boost membership.
The qualifications and skills the Coalition seeks in its new Executive Director include:
Experience in the field of diversity and inclusion in a legal environment, either in a paid or unpaid position (though not required, prior experience as a law firm or law department attorney or law firm or law department D&I professional is preferred).
The ability to engage in high-level strategic thinking and planning, as well as the ability to envision and convey the Coalition’s mission, strategy, and future direction to the Board, the Communications Director (and any future staff members), member organizations, individual volunteers, and the community.
Strong aptitude for verbal and written communication, presentation, and relationship-building.
The ability to work collaboratively with others.
The ability to work independently, and to be self-directed, while at the same time directing others as necessary.
