Senior Intellectual Property Paralegal - Office of University Counsel - (21001449)
The Office of University Counsel is responsible for managing the legal affairs of the University including advising the board of trustees, president, provost and senior management of schools and divisions on legal issues as well as managing outside counsel hired to represent Tufts. The office provides advice and support to the University's administrative and academic leadership and personnel on a broad range of matters, including, among others, employee relations, real estate transaction, contracts, litigation and policy development. The office also coordinates the selection and supervision of outside law firms.
Works closely with the Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property in the Office of University Counsel, to support the Office of Technology Transfer and Industry Collaboration (TTIC) and Tufts University's growing intellectual property portfolio. Responsible for reviewing all incoming correspondence, maintaining a docket database, obtaining signatures on formal documents required by US and foreign Patent Offices and, as needed, electronically filing patents and other paperwork with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Stays up to date on all USPTO rules and regulations as well as foreign country and PCT office requirements. Interacts with others in the TTIC, the Office of University Counsel, as well as faculty and inventors at Tufts and other entities.
Knowledge and skills as typically acquired through completion of Bachelor's Degree, paralegal certification with 7 -10+ years of relevant experience in either a law firm or in-house patent department.
Working knowledge of IP filing and prosecution rules/regulations
Prior experience filing patent applications and other patent prosecution related filings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
Skilled in Patent Docketing (e.g. CPi), USPTO filing and assignment system (EFS, EPAS) databases
* Experience in preparing supporting documents and templates related to patent prosecution such as:
Filing papers accompanying patent applications;
Preparing formal documents (Declarations, Assignments, Powers of Attorney, etc.); and
Comfort with contacting the USPTO and navigating the PTO website to obtain documents and information
Proficient in Outlook, Word, Excel, document management systems, U.S. and foreign patent office online resources. Ability to learn other computer applications with training provided necessary to the completion of tasks.

Paralegal Certificate of Completion of an ABA (American Bar Association) approved course of study and education beyond high school evidenced by completion of a four-year degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience in reviewing and revising agreements, including material transfer agreements, non-disclosure agreements, and data use agreements.
