The “New Jersey First Act,” , N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70) effective September 1, 2011, contains new residency requirements for public officers and employees, unless exempted under the law. Current, new or prospective employees should be aware of the following:
Effective September 1, 2011, all employees of State and local government must reside in the State of New Jersey, unless exempted under the law. If you already work for State or local government as of September 1, 2011, and you do not live in New Jersey, you are not required to move to New Jersey. However, if you begin your office, position or employment on September 1, 2011 or later, you must reside in New Jersey. If you do not reside in New Jersey, you have one year after the date you take your office, position or employment to relocate your residence to New Jersey. If you do not do so, you are subject to removal from your office, position or employment.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a full-time, CWA position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Note: Those non-faculty employees in the “NE” category of employment may have irregular or variable work hours. The compensatory time policy for NL employees below applies to “NE” employees up to 40 hours per week. Beyond 40 hours, the overtime policy for fixed workweek employees applies (i.e., rate of time and one-half in payment or compensatory time)

Under the direction of the General Counsel, the Paralegal will assist attorney(s) by providing clerical and research support services including document preparation and review; research, investigations, and fact checking of documents. The Paralegal will further be responsible for independently performing professional work of greater difficulty using established policies, procedures, precedents, and guidelines.
Assist the General Counsel with case documents, evidence gathering, and court response documents,
Meets with attorneys, clients, and/or other professionals to discuss assigned cases or projects.
Drafts legal documents including routine pleadings and motions, affidavits, and interrogatories; files motions and pleadings according to judicial procedures.
Assist the General Counsel with research and analysis of statutes, regulations, legal articles, judicial decisions, and other legal sources.
Manage Office of General Counsel’s contract database, ensure timely turnaround, review contractual agreements, provide comments and recommendations for amendments to ensure compliance and safeguard the College.
Prepares, organizes, stores, and retrieves case files, which may include evidence, exhibits, depositions, pleadings, exhibits, and other items.
Assist the General Counsel with preparation for trials, hearings and other administrative proceedings.
At the direction of the General Counsel, respond to campus legal inquiries and needs.
Assist in troubleshooting cases and College legal issues as needed.
Consults with the General Counsel regarding issues and concerns encountered in the course of duties; provides recommendations for resolution.
Establishes liaison and maintains cooperative working relationships with other staff or organizations whose functions impact on assigned responsibilities.
Attends and participates in meetings or college events related to assigned responsibilities.
Prepares clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Prepares correspondence and maintains essential records and files.
Monitors the fiscal affairs of the area and provides information for inclusion in the budget.
Develops and implements training, seminars, and workshops for students and/or staff.
May be required to learn and utilize various types of information systems used by the College.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies or related field. *Note: Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute experience on a year for year basis.
Paralegal certificate preferred
2 - 4 years of experience in paralegal work or related legal professional experience in a law firm or in house legal department is required.
Ability to maintain and follow professional ethics of strict confidentiality
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Understanding of legal language and principles, research methods, court pleadings and processes, and other related matters.
Knowledge of rules and regulations applicable to Higher Education institutions, preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
