The Office of Development (OOD) supports the goals and purposes of Stanford University. OOD staff members, working in concert with academic leadership and volunteers, strive to enhance, over the long-term, useful gift support to Stanford. In the process, development staff establish and nurture relationships with students, alumni, parents, friends, corporations, foundations and associations. The Deputy Director of Planned Giving will report to the Senior Director of Planned Giving and will support all aspects of gift planning and related tax and legal matters in the Office of Development including, but not limited to, increasing the awareness of charitable giving techniques among alumni and friends of the university.
Effectively working with the Assistant Vice President and Senior Director of Planned Giving to manage, lead and inspire the staff in the Office of Planned Giving. Help set program goals to achieve goals and vision of the organization and provide regular and constructive performance communication.
Helping to lead staff, and/or providing strategic support, to carry out planned giving initiatives, including proactive efforts to increase the number of bequests and life income gifts, internal and external outreach, field staff training, communications and donor recognition.
Directly managing staff including highly experienced and knowledgeable professionals.
Supporting the office's goals for stewardship of bequest and life income donors.
Working with donors, prospects, and their legal and financial advisors to establish charitable trusts, bequests, and complex outright gifts to benefit the university.
Initiating gift discussions with and responding to inquiries from donors and prospects. Collaborating with other university development officers in gift solicitations, providing expertise in connection with bequests, charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, pooled income funds, charitable lead trusts, gifts of real estate, and other complex assets.
Providing guidance to development officers relating to due diligence and gift terms for outright gifts.
Assisting with the program that provides information about gifts and bequests to Stanford to attorneys and other professionals involved in estate planning.
Helping to provide leadership in connection with the stewardship of bequest and life income donors.
Providing technical support and policy construction including accurate documentation of outright gifts and consultation to increase awareness of complex and deferred gift vehicles and cultivate new donors.
May involve assisting with the monitoring of the administration of estate and trust distributions to Stanford, including direct interface with legal counsel, trustees, and administrators for estates and trusts that name Stanford University as beneficiary, and in managing the relationship between Stanford and the estate/trust representatives in a professional manner that results in timely and efficient distributions.
May involve assisting in the design and implementation of marketing efforts to provide information on the methods and benefits of trusts, bequests, and other planned gifts to all whose circumstances might lead to such gifts.
Continuing to develop and maintain current expertise in tax, trust, probate, and other laws affecting charitable giving.
Representing the university in discussions with donors regarding the use of their gifts. Determining university compliance with donor restrictions and donor intent in its management of gifts funds.
Working closely with OOD's Senior Philanthropic Advisor and Development Legal Counsel and the Assistant Vice President and Senior Director of Planned Giving on development legal matters.
Coordinating with other Stanford offices concerning acceptance, management, and disposition of gift property, including real estate, limited partnership interests, and other non-cash gifts.
Assisting with training staff and volunteers on planned giving topics.
Working closely on a collaborative basis with other professional staff in the Office of Planned Giving, the Office of Development, Financial Management Services, the General Counsel's office, and other offices at the University.
Drafting pledge and gift agreements with varying degrees of complexity, charitable trust documents, and sample bequest language for gifts to Stanford.

Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree. A J.D., LLB, related advanced degree/certification, or combination of education and experience is required. Five years (Seven to ten years preferred) of related professional experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in planned giving, tax, trust, estate planning, probate, and/or related matters.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong writing skills.
A high degree of technical expertise in planned giving
Proven experience dealing with unique gift assets creatively and effectively
Exceptional ability to organize and motivate staff, and ability to manage colleagues that combine fundraising field work with planned giving expertise
Proven record of accomplishment that demonstrates initiative, creativity, managerial, and interpersonal skills, preferably in a university setting
Proven ability to work effectively with a diverse array of prospects, donors and staff.
Demonstrated ability to initiate and build relationships with individuals.
Ability to work and motivate others, including prospective donors and their advisors, volunteers, and staff.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize a variety of tasks and demands.
Must communicate effectively and possess excellent interpersonal skills, including strong negotiating skills.
Strong time management skills.
Confidentiality and discretion of the highest order are required.
Ability to use current desktop software applications.
Advanced knowledge of standard and complex charitable giving techniques.
Demonstrated experience engaging and motivating groups of diverse individuals.
Certifications and Licenses:
Ability to obtain and maintain a Non-commercial Class Driver's license.
Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, stand/walk, sit, use a telephone.
Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.
May require travel and occasional work during evenings and/or weekends.
When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.
