The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. We are a non-profit that provides 24/7 life-saving support via phone, text, and chat. We also operate the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth and run innovative research, education, and advocacy programs. We’ve been saving lives every day for over 20 years.
Overview of the role
The International Expansion Counsel of The Trevor Project will work directly with the General Counsel on various high-level projects, and also take a lead role on many day-to-day matters, focusing on legal issues relating to international expansion, all in support of The Trevor Project’s mission of saving young LGBTQ lives. The International Expansion Counsel will be positioned to take on significant responsibilities and have an impact on legal processes and policies across a high-growth tech-focused nonprofit organization.
Who you are
Experienced. You are a member of at least one state bar in good standing, with at least 6-10 years of experience as a practicing attorney, ideally with experience in-house. Experience with handling legal issues relating to international expansion is required. You also have an interest in one or more other legal areas of focus at Trevor, such as compliance and risk management, general contracts, government contracting, lobbying compliance, and litigation. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
Fast and analytical. You quickly understand a situation and identify the key pieces necessary to move forward.
Sensible. You exercise excellent judgment, effectively work independently while escalating issues as needed to your supervisor, navigate sensitive matters with appropriate discretion, and have an eye for business considerations as well as legal ones.
Diligent and Organized. You demonstrate thoroughness and attention to detail in your work, and you love process and project management. You are flexible and can work with shifting objectives and use a variety of approaches.
Resourceful. Even when you don’t have the answer to a particular question or experience in a particular area, you propose potential solutions for working through the challenge.
Goal-oriented. You approach problems to be solved from a “what would it take to get this done” mentality, while identifying obstacles and risk in line with the organization’s approach.
Innovative. You are a self-starter and proactively identify ways to make the Legal team’s processes and work product better.
Collaborative. You can communicate clearly with non-lawyers on legal topics, and work cooperatively with others who may have competing priorities.
Passionate. You care about LGBTQ youth. You care about saving lives. You want to come to work and feel inspired every day. You want to change the world.
Fun. The work we do is very serious, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun. We know how to have a good time and you should too.
