The Corporate Counsel will be a member of Marriott’s Law Department in the Global Compliance group, based at Marriott’s corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. This attorney will help support our culture of integrity by providing legal support for the Company’s Ethics and Global Compliance program, including crucial risk areas such as:
Economic and trade sanctions, including the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC);
Anti-corruption and anti-bribery, including the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and the UK Bribery Act;
Antitrust and competition law;
Anti-money laundering;
Ethics and Code of Conduct;
Whistleblower hotline (Business Integrity Line); and
Other critical areas as designated by the General Counsel and the Global Compliance Counsel.
The Corporate Counsel will report to and directly support the Vice President & Senior Counsel, Global Compliance.
Specific Job Duties, Responsibilities, and Expected Contributions
Help support the overall Ethics & Global Compliance program by identifying ethics and legal compliance issues of material concern and work with leadership to identify appropriate direction and courses of action;
Develop, draft, and maintain policies, standards and procedures in the key risk areas and work cross-functionally with stakeholders to integrate these policy requirements into global operations;
Conduct and participate in ethics and legal compliance risk assessments and develop risk mitigation strategies;
Provide legal advice and guidance to internal stakeholders related to global compliance matters;
Make presentations and conduct training on ethics and legal compliance topics;
Monitor and assess the effectiveness of compliance activities;
Maintain strong coordination, cooperation and mutual support between the Law Department and Internal Audit, Finance, Internal Investigations, Government Affairs, Human Resources, and the regional Ethics and Global Compliance Councils;
Monitor current and evolving statutes, regulations, and case law and helping to identify urgent legal issues of critical importance in a global business environment; interpret regulations and case law and translate regulations in business terms for stakeholders; and
Respond to government investigations or queries as appropriate and/or required.
Minimum of 5 years’ legal experience in an Ethics and Compliance role, preferably supporting a global compliance program or with a focus on trade sanctions compliance;
Excellent academic records with a law degree (J.D.) from a top law school;
Admission to the Bar of a US state;
Experience interfacing with government agencies having jurisdiction over compliance risk areas;
Experience providing advice and counsel on compliance matters with a focus on individual integrity and principled business conduct;
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and resources with a sense of urgency and to navigate within a complex organization in a deadline-driven environment;
Flexibility and adaptability in addressing global issues as they arise across multiple time zones by being sensitive to potential local business and cultural differences;
Ability to expeditiously identify and analyze issues and provide legally sound recommendations consistent with good business practices;
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively and work diplomatically with individuals at all levels;
Ability to foster relationships across the organization;
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills (Powerpoint skills a plus);
Proven contract drafting and negotiating skills;
Excellent conflict management skills and ability to influence without coercion;
Ability to balance priorities, work activities, and resources for the benefit of multiple key stakeholders;
Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and facilitate the implementation of creative solutions;
Ability to work independently, take ownership of and effectively solve problems; and
Available for business travel.
