Position Summary
An opportunity exists for an experienced RN, NP or PA with a Valid New York State Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant license to apply clinical knowledge in a dynamic health care environment. The Risk Management Coordinator is responsible for promoting safe patient care, mitigating malpractice and general liability exposure, facilitates regulatory compliance in accordance with New York State and Federal regulations. Duties include but are not limited to medical record reviews, staff and faculty consultation, Policy & Procedure involvement & Risk Management evaluation. Risk Management reports to the Chief Medical Officer. Qualified candidates must demonstrate superior communication, writing and organizational skills. Maintaining confidentiality regarding sensitive matters is essential.
Duties of a Risk Management Coordinator may include the following but are not limited to:
- Assumes medical malpractice claims management responsibilities
- Accepts Legal Papers for the Hospital and current Hospital employees
- Manages the medical malpractice database from file creation to closure
- Arranges the CEO Quarterly Report meeting presented by Risk for Executive Leadership
- Prepares Medical Malpractice Case Summary Reports for Defense attorneys
- Manages & coordinates Legal Discovery requests related to ongoing malpractice cases
- Consults with Legal Counsel and Attorney General Malpractice Defense Attorneys
- Completes Patient Occurrence reviews related to serious harm; ensures follow up
- Identifies & investigates Sentinel Events, facilitates RCA process for DOH submission
- Provides staff education; attends meetings & delivers presentations
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Valid New York State Registered Nurse License or Physician Assistant License
- Bachelor Degree or Higher
- Five or more years of broad Hospital experience
- Computer proficiency, i.e; Microsoft Office
- Excellent writing, communication, critical thinking
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hospital Risk Management/Quality experience
- Medical Legal experience

In accordance with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulation that all hospitals and nursing homes "continuously require all personnel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19," Candidates who are not already partially vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of acceptance of conditional job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol, including booster vaccines. Candidates who are partially vaccinated, but not yet fully vaccinated, must complete their vaccination series within three (3) calendar days of job offer or in accordance with vaccine manufacture protocol, whichever comes later.
The regulation also includes those who may be affiliated with or interact with employees of a hospital or nursing home. The regulation allows for limited exemptions with reasonable accommodations, consistent with applicable law.

- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Successfully complete a 5 panel drug screen*
- Successfully complete a Background Check investigation.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
* The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
