This position is part of a new Intellectual Property (IP) team within the Technology Innovation and Development Office (TIDO) whose role is to support the management, development, and maintenance of BCH's diverse and expanding patent portfolio.
Principal duties and Responsibilities:
Monitor and process TIDO's central patents email account
Develop internal patent administration procedures Streamline and automate routine tasks and procedures
Ensure timely filing of patent applications in cooperation with Licensing staff and outside counsel
Enter patent application data and docket patent deadlines and related data in TIDO's database
Organize and process assignment and declaration documents in conjunction with outside counsel, obtain required signatures and confirm receipt by counsel for filing with USPTO
Process patent-related portions of grant closeout requests for the Office of Sponsored Programs
Process, monitor and confirm payment of patent annuities through CPI
Verify and process limited power of attorney documents for foreign patent agents
Support the Licensing staff in coordinating and collaborating with inventors and outside counsel
Assume management of LegalTracker, including matter creation, invoice review, and coordination with outside counsel
Prepare statistics reports and patent dockets and participate in patent review meetings, preparing minutes
Work with(in) other functional teams in TIDO is essential
Ensure compliance with all patent laws, regulations, and procedures
Knowledge and Skills:
Must have previous working knowledge and experience using databases, spreadsheets, word processing, and email software packages (Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook preferred).
Familiarity with patent rules and patent-related databases is strongly desirable.
Demonstrated work experience managing multiple responsibilities, setting priorities, taking initiative, and meeting deadlines.
Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to complete tasks accurately
Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and independently in a fast-paced environment
A paralegal certificate in Intellectual Property is desirable.
Familiarity with law firm docketing and billing practices is desirable.
Experience in data management working in sophisticated databases with large volumes of complex data, with an ability to learn and master the internal IP management system.
Analytical skills to resolve multifaceted problems requiring the application of business or technical principles, theories, and concepts with, experienced-based functional knowledge.
Strong organizational skills
Ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, researchers, and administrators across the hospital to collect and confirm information
Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing environment as the role develops and grows
Required:
Bachelor's Degree or 6 years of relevant experience.
