The Release of Information Specialist reviews, validates, and processes requests for release of protected health information (PHI). Retrieves and processes release of PHI from electronic systems and paper medical records as requested by providers, insurance companies, patients, attorneys, third-party payers, disability and workman's compensation providers. Provides PHI following Washington State and Federal HIPAA laws, SCCA policies, and HIM principles.
Responsibilities
- Reviews and validates ROI forms for the use and disclosure of protected health information (PHI) according to state and HIPAA laws for all requests.
- Ensures all appropriate requests for release of PHI are completed in a timely and accurate manner following Federal and Washington State Laws.
- Ensures requests are completed per HIM department processes, including contacts with patients and staff for clarification as needed.
- Invoices billable requests in accordance with Washington State Law.
- Provides necessary patient records for compliance with all regulatory audits requested by the Integrity Department.
- Processes requests for billing records from provider billing (UWP) and Medicare (CERT).
- Effectively communicates ROI issues to Manager.
- Acts as a resource for staff regarding ROI questions.
- Performs other reasonably related HIM duties as assigned by HIM leadership.
- Meets productivity standards as determined by HIM leadership.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited Health Information Management program or equivalent work experience.
- One year release of information experience
- Highly organized with ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Demonstrates proficiency with computer data entry skills.
- Knowledge of health information management operations and HIPAA guidelines.
- Ability to interact with many types of internal and external customers in a flexible, accommodating manner
- Demonstrated ability to communicate well (in both verbal and written formats) with patients, staff, and providers.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment based upon departmental policies and procedures.
- Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite applications, ORCA and Web ROI software.
Preferred:
SCCA has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, and there are no exceptions for any employee who is patient-facing and/or requires access to SCCA facilities.
Exceptions exist only for employees whose positions are fully remote, with no required access to campus. As a condition of employment, newly hired employees requiring access to campus must provide proof of vaccination before their first day of employment.
