California Western School of Law (CWSL), San Diego seeks applicants for an Assistant Director, Pro Bono and Public Service (Assistant Director) in the Career and Professional Development Office (CPDO). The Assistant Director reports to the Assistant Dean of Career and Professional Development. This position conducts one-on-one student and alumni counseling and maintains accurate and confidential records related thereto, including implementation of online career management tools and resources. The Assistant Director participates in the development and delivery of the career development curriculum, including researching and preparing materials, promoting programming, and presenting material to large and small groups. The Assistant Director develops and oversees pro bono, public service, government, judicial and JAG opportunities for students and alumni.
The primary responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
Develop and administer Pro Bono and Public Service Programs, and related connections, job opportunities, and events, including the Pro Bono and Public Service Fair and Pro Bono and Public Service Honors Societies and Induction Ceremony. Manage tracking of pro bono and public service student hours using Track it Forward or similar software.
Act as primary counselor and employer contact for job opportunities for students and alumni in pro bono, public service, government, judiciary and JAG.
Recruit new employers and maintain existing employers for CPDO programs, increasing the number of employment opportunities for students and alumni, especially in pro bono, public service, government, judiciary and JAG. Maintain records of related employers.
Act as primary liaison and facilitator with student organization PILF, and other related student organizations as needed.
Counsel and coach students and alumni one-on-one respecting career strategy and advancement.
Oversee and implement researching and drafting of curriculum materials. Present curricula to large and small groups.
Review and critique of students’ and graduates’ marketing materials.
Conduct mock law job interviews.
Follow new developments in lawyer employment and counseling best practices.
Assist Director of the Access to Law Incubator (ALI).
Assist at ALI free clinic(s) funded by City Council and other grants.
Monitor and promote job opportunities for students and alumni.
Match students and target employers and then follow-up with employers and students.
Work closely with CPDO staff to implement Mentor, Career Advisor, Panel Series, Lunch With Lawyers, Exploring Options, and Pro Bono and Public Service Programs. Promote student participation in CPDO programs.
Work to make CPDO programs and information available online, and to be creative in developing online resources, including social media, webinars, videos, and podcasts.
Promote CWSL in pro bono, public service, legal and business communities.
Represent CPDO externally by participation in bench and bar events, organizations and activities, especially in pro bono, public service, government, judiciary and JAG.
Stay active in the local legal community by becoming involved in at least two lawyers’ networking group, such as the San Diego County Bar Association and the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego.
Report as needed, verbally or in writing, to the Board of Trustees, the Dean, and senior administration.
Travel to local, regional and national events as needed.
Comply with CWSL Travel Policy and related expense reporting.
Work with appropriate level of assistance, instruction and supervision.
Proactively advise the Assistant Dean of project status, potential issues and overall departmental progress.
Perform, with team approach, other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Juris Doctor Degree required.
2-5 years of law practice experience preferred..
Law practice in pro bono, public service, government, judiciary and/or JAG preferred.
Experience in higher education or significant legal recruiting or business development experience preferred.
Must be able to counsel and advise students and graduates.
A thorough knowledge of all aspects of the legal profession and the job market; and practices and procedures related to career planning and placement required.
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills essential.
Effective oral and written communication skills are essential.
Must be available for evening and occasional weekend work and possible multi-day and overnight travel.
Professional attire and presentation are required.
Computer Skills:
Intermediate level computer skills.
Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Forms, and PowerPoint.
Proficient with the use of Excel formulas, including vertical look-ups, data comparisons, sorting data, and various data manipulations.
Proficient with mail merges, formatting letters, footnotes and creating tables.
Basic proficiency with formulas, creating macros and charts, and managing data.
General internet skills are essential.
Knowledge of effective internet search properties.
Experience with website management, electronic communication and database systems, data analysis and interpretation required.
Aptitude for learning new technology.
