Job Summary: The Assistant Law Librarian facilitates the use of the library for the general public, law students, alumni, local attorneys, and faculty. May provide such services as selection and purchasing of books, ensure accessibility and maintenance of book collections, and provide reference services.

Additional Department Summary: The Bounds Law Library at the University of Alabama School of Law invites applications for a new Metadata and Digital Archives Position. Working under the supervision of the Associate Director for Collection Services, this position will perform resource description and classification processes for all material types, including both original and copy cataloging, authority control, managing the batch loading of vendor provided records, and maintenance of records in the library’s integrated library system. Responsibilities will include proposing and implementing policies, procedures, and best practices related to metadata standards, schema, and technologies, as well as assisting the Associate Director of Collection Services to ensure materials are discoverable, generate statistics and reports, and assist in the on-going assessment of collection capacity.

This position will also work under the guidance of the Curator of Archival Collections to recommend and implement policies, procedures, and workflows related to digitization and management of digital archives on various platforms including the Law School’s online repository. Responsibilities will include generating metadata related to archival collections, assisting in the assessment and execution of digitization projects, working collaboratively to develop metadata supporting the discovery and management of digital content in the law school repository, and contributing to archives-oriented outreach initiatives, including physical and digital exhibits.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Master of Library Science and one (1) year of experience in a public service library or archive environment.

Skills and Knowledge: Excellent organizational, project-management, and time-management skills. Ability to learn and understand complex library practices, procedures, and technologies. Ability to solve problems and manage projects with flexibility and creativity. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for working collaboratively in a diverse academic environment. Knowledge of legal bibliography and online research techniques.

Preferred Qualifications: Education or experience working with metadata and cataloging standards, schema, formats and related utilities and tools, such as MARC21, AARC2, RDA, FRBR, OCLC Connexion, MARC Edit, and LCSH, and LC Classification schedules. Education or experience with digitization and digital archival standards, technologies, and data structures. Experience working with institutional repositories and related technologies. Experience with Innovative Interfaces’ Sierra.
