Leads the functional unit (Business Development and Licensing) that creates and manages a diverse portfolio of transactions and agreements. The Unit consists of several licensing professionals who work as part of a larger team of patent, contract, business development, and entrepreneurship specialists to license inventions to existing companies and startups. Transactions in the Unitâ™s portfolio remit include licenses, options, inter-institutional agreements, materials transfer agreements, confidentiality agreements, and negotiation of intellectual property terms in other agreements as needed.
Provides negotiation support, training, and guidance to the unit, and for overseeing the quality and consistency of all unit transactions.
Manages a diverse, hybrid team with an eye toward individual and team professional development and training and for reporting on the achievements of the team.
Collaborates with faculty members, researchers, colleagues, and other individuals across campus along with industry partners to achieve shared transactional objectives.
Establishes and cultivates strong relationships with inventors, legal counsel, prospective and current licensees, University Research Administration, the Office of Corporate Engagement, and Polsky Center colleagues to promote the Universityâ™s mission and its Polsky Center to catalyze ideas into impact.
Uses depth and breadth of knowledge to promote the mission and business of the department through developing strong relationships with inventors, legal counsel, prospective and actual licensees, and colleagues.
Manages the development of intellectual portfolio patenting, licensing, and commercialization activities. Interprets patent issues and reviews patent prosecution for selected inventions.
Reviews existing agreements for performance, compliance, and payment of associated fees. Leads development of marketing plans and implementation. Maintains communication with faculty and patent attorneys.
Performs other related work as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
Advanced degree in a scientific discipline.
Experience:
10+ years of work experience in technology licensing in an academic or industry setting.
Deep hands-on expertise in negotiating and drafting intellectual property agreements.
