The Raleigh office of McGuireWoods seeks an experienced Associate to join the Carolinas energy regulatory team within the firm’s Regulatory & Compliance Department.
The McGuireWoods Carolinas energy regulatory practice represents regulated electric, gas and water utilities, as well as energy project developers and energy industry investors in all aspects of energy regulation and regulatory compliance – providing client counseling, obtaining regulatory approvals, permitting, siting, rulemaking, legislation, project development, and agency liaison, at federal, state and local levels.
Our team primarily represents major electric and gas utilities in complex administrative litigation before the public utility commissions in North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as support our clients’ legislative and regulatory policy strategies. Our experienced team of energy industry experts focus on all aspects of energy and utilities regulation, including natural gas and electric power, renewables, utility rates and regulation, transmission, electric market design and Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), utility facility siting and regulatory approvals, and regulatory compliance work for utilities, large and small independent producers, and many other types of energy companies and in regulated industries.
Our practice also includes energy regulatory aspects of transactions for the financing, development, acquisition and disposition of energy/utility assets. Our energy lawyers have been part of the evolving energy regulatory landscape for the past 50 years and we regularly represent energy clients in regulatory proceedings before state public utility commissions, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and a host of other state agencies, covering a wide variety of federal and state energy regulatory statutes and compliance issues.
Qualified candidates will have at least 2 years of practice, preference for energy regulatory/administrative law or complex civil litigation experience. Energy regulatory experience at the state or federal level including experience with renewable energy resources preferred but not mandatory. Position will have significant exposure to utility-industry clients and future opportunities in administrative hearings before public service commissions in multiple states and before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Candidates must possess strong academic credentials as well as demonstrated organization, writing and communication skills, a desire to do stand-up trial work and an enthusiasm for working with a team.
