The Gould School of Law seeks to hire part-time lecturers for the Externship Program for the Summer 2023 term. The primary responsibility of each instructor will be to supervise the academic work related to the student externship program. Instructors will be compensated for teaching a one-credit course.

The goal of the course is to support students’ development of their legal and professional skills over the course of their externships. Instructors will work with students as they evaluate their skills, set their learning goals, work to integrate their doctrinal knowledge with the reality of the practice of law, master challenging skills and begin to develop their professional identities. Instructors’ responsibilities will include reviewing and commenting on student work (essays and time reports), counseling students by email and phone as needed, creating, monitoring and responding to submissions to one time-limited online forum, and contacting students’ supervisors as appropriate. Because summer externs often work in placements outside of the Los Angeles area, much of the communication with students will be via email.

Candidates must be attorneys with a J.D. degree who have five years of experience in one or more of the practice areas below and must reside in the Los Angeles area. Attorneys with experience in supervising law student externs or teaching in a law school setting will be given special consideration. Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to fostering the growth and development of law students and new attorneys.

Candidates with practice experience in federal, state or local government, the non-profit sector or in a corporate general counsel’s office are encouraged to apply. Attorneys with extensive practice experience in a law firm setting may also be considered if they have three or more years of experience in one of the practice settings just listed and have done substantial training and supervision of law students and new attorneys. Candidates who have completed a federal clerkship of at least one year in length, or who have served as a research attorney in a state appellate court for two or more years, may count those years toward the minimum required experience.

USC reserves the “Adjunct” appointment for faculty teaching less than full-time at USC, who are employed full-time in a primary profession or career elsewhere. Adjunct faculty typically teach only one course per year but, in exceptional cases, may teach one course per semester, if approved by the dean.

The base salary range for this position is $2,232 - $4,730 per semester. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the number of units per course, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
