Provide immigration legal representation of clients in proceedings before the Alaska Court System, Department of Homeland Security, the Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Includes appearances at hearings, preparation of witnesses, legal research, and the preparation of briefs and other pleadings.
Manage case files in accordance with program policy and procedures.
Work with paralegals and volunteers when they are assisting in your client-related work. Includes oversight of case management, telephone assistance and preparation of documents.
Meet deadlines imposed by state court judges, the Executive Office of Immigration Review, the Department of Homeland Security and the Supervising Attorney of the Alaska Immigration Justice Project.
Provide consultations and prescreen clients to review client eligibility for human trafficking services.
Participate in outreach and education activities to immigrant community, social service, legal services and health care providers and attorneys to increase awareness about human trafficking. Participate in Human Trafficking Task Force meetings.
When appropriate work with law enforcement officers to advocate for protection and safety for human trafficking clients.
Provide comprehensive case management supportive services for human trafficking victims to assist with housing, public assistance benefits, employment services, mental health services, physical health care services and any other services to assist the client to meet her/his needs.
Provide legal representation of human trafficking clients in other courts when material to immigration, family law and other legal issues related to the victimization of clients.
Assist domestic violence and sexual assault programs and other agencies working with human trafficking crime victims to make services accessible to underserved and limited English proficient trafficking survivors statewide.
Develop culturally and linguistically appropriate resource material for human trafficking victims, if needed.
Perform general office duties, such as faxing, copying and filing.
Maintain case statistics for reports to funders.
QUALIFICATIONS
J.D. degree required and licensed to practice law in the United States.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and work experience with culturally diverse clients required.
Previous work experience with domestic violence, sexual assault or human trafficking survivors, or non-profit legal services program and minimum two years legal experience is preferred.
Self-confidence and be able to advocate on behalf of clients with compassion.
Able to work with a team of co-workers in stressful situations and to work with people from diverse cultures whose first language is not English.
Commitment to providing legal representation to underserved immigrant and limited English proficient individuals and those normally excluded from the justice system.
