The eData and Legal Technology Department of Arnold & Porter has an opening for a Legal Technology Manager. This position may be located in any of the Firm’s domestic offices, or this position may work 100% virtual/remote in a Firm approved U.S. state. The Legal Technology Manager will manage the identification, selection, testing, and implementation of practice innovation solutions to support the Firm’s practices and clients, and drive adoption of those solutions by applying innovation methodologies and change management best practices.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Collaborating with the Firm’s lawyers and clients to conceptualize innovative solutions incorporating people, process, and/or technology, to achieve business objectives and deliver exceptional client service centered on value, cost-effectiveness, efficiency, transparency, and predictability.
Developing a comprehensive strategy to implement HighQ workspaces for different legal teams and practice groups, consulting with each group individually to determine and execute on their needs.
Working with the Firm’s lawyers and clients to document challenges, requirements, and business objectives; understanding how to solve business objectives versus feature specifications.
Managing innovation projects, including scoping, prioritizing, planning, and efficiently executing projects from start to finish; develops standard processes, procedures, and reports for such projects.
Managing the identification, testing and implementation of practice technology-related platforms and software; effectively coordinating internal stakeholders across firm departments.
Creating and maintaining relationships with practice group leads and key stakeholders to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation.
In consultation with external providers, developing success criteria and setting guidelines and commitments for pilots and proofs of concept with new technologies and services; coordinating and managing pilot and proof of concept programs that enable the Firm to make educated decisions about new technologies and services, including the design, collection, and presentation of participant surveys and other forms of feedback.
Seeking writing and speaking opportunities to raise the profile of eData and the Legal Technology Group.
Establishing processes and documentation to support the successful deployment of practice innovation solutions.
Developing and tracking metrics for adoption and usage of practice innovation initiatives.
Developing business cases to support the Firm’s investment in practice innovation initiatives to solve specific business objectives; measuring and comparing success metrics against actual ROI.
Monitoring the legal innovation landscape, including for strategic insights, to gain an understanding of how specific people, processes, and technology can solve legal practice challenges, and to bolster the business case for innovation initiatives.
Working closely with the Firm’s IT department to ensure legal innovation solutions are developed and/or deployed in compliance with Firm requirements and following best practices for the management of the Firm’s legal technology and related data.
Creating and maintaining internal and external practice innovation resource content.
Participating in projects as assigned, including requirements gathering, analysis, documentation, internal and external outreach, research, and education.
Maintaining a strong working relationship with other members of the Legal Technology Group, the IT department, the Marketing department, Research Services, and other internal partners.
Works alongside attorneys, clients and vendors to build and refine practice innovation solutions; provides ongoing support for deployed solutions and serves as point of contact for troubleshooting inquiries.
Building and maintaining relationships with in-house legal teams to socialize the benefits of practice innovation solutions in improving their legal operations and service delivery to their businesses.
Supports the development of training programs, templates, tutorials, and self-help resources for successful attorney adoption of practice innovation solutions.
Assisting in the design of internal and external marketing campaigns to promote and grow the Firm’s practice innovation tools, solutions, and initiatives.
Developing written and oral communications that clearly explain technical concepts using non-technical language, and legal concepts using non-legal language.
Performing new product demonstrations and trainings to potential internal software users.
Qualifications:
Four-year college degree preferred. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the degree when the experience has been directly related to the functions of the job, preferably in a law firm, corporate legal department, or other legal services provider environment.
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an active litigation support or litigation technology environment preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible, directly related experience during which knowledge, skills, and abilities applicable to the position were demonstrated. In particular, experience must include innovation consulting, project management, and/or client-facing roles.
A combination of experience inside and outside a law firm environment with knowledge management and/or legal innovation practices preferred.
Proven track record of figuring out a solution when no clear solution is visible, including by piecing together disparate systems.
Familiarity with legal technology concepts such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive coding.
Knowledge of content management, database structure and theory.
Knowledge of change management theory and/or experience with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
Awareness and understanding of the business of law and relevant practices, and the relationship between effective matter management, profitability, and delivering value to clients.
Experience designing and managing sites using the HighQ platform.
Comfortable with making presentations to small and/or large groups in an effective manner.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and capable of producing quality, compelling communications in various forms, including memos, spreadsheets, and slides.
Excellent project management skills; experience with project management tools such as Asana, MS Teams, and Smartsheet a plus.
Deep understanding of attorney work product across practice areas. Ability to establish credibility with the Firm’s lawyers and clients as a valuable resource and internal consultant.
Knowledgeable about corporate legal operations departments; demonstrated ability to interface with corporate legal operations teams.
Ability to work effectively, both independently and with others, in a cooperative, enthusiastic, and friendly manner to accomplish position functions and participate in team efforts.
Strong business analysis skills, the demonstrated ability to exceed client expectations, and strategic thinking acumen; willing to ask questions where appropriate and guide others when required.
Superior communication skills, both orally and in writing, with lawyers and other professionals across the firm, clients, and service providers, including the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts using non-technical language to varying levels and personas within and outside the Firm.
Strong organizational and time management skills, priority setting, and problem solving, especially when responding to unanticipated business requirements.
Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to provide quality client service to both internal and external contacts. Requires sound judgment with respect to confidential and sensitive information.
Ability to quickly learn and utilize new software programs and tools.
Flexibility to work additional hours, as necessary.
The anticipated base salary for this position is $135,000 to $180,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
