Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Attorneys in UNC Charlotte's Office of Legal Affairs have challenging, wide-ranging practices and must be able to handle multiple, unrelated matters concurrently. The Associate Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel must be able to complete complex projects both independently and with direction from the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel. The Associate Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel (AVCDGC) will supervise Office of Legal Affairs staff, including all Senior Associate General Counsels, Associate General Counsels, Assistant General Counsels, the University Public Records Officer/Legal Specialist, and the Legal Fellow (as applicable). While it is expected that the AVCDGC will have a specific expertise in matters related to student affairs, including student safety and student discipline; harassment and discrimination complaints in both student and employment realms; institutional compliance, including Title IX and the Clery Act; policy development and revision; and institutional governance, s/he will advise UNC Charlotte's chancellor, administrators, and Board of Trustees on a full range of legal and policy issues.
Minimum Experience / Education:
J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
Prior experience as an attorney for a university, or relevant in-house or law firm experience required.
Minimum five years of relevant experience required.
Preferred Education Skills and Experience:
Ten years of relevant experience strongly preferred.
Higher education, research, information technology, and intellectual property experience is strongly preferred.
Excellent written communication skills; strong verbal and written communication skills in presenting complex legal principles in laymen terms to senior administrators, staff, and faculty.
Strong interpersonal and listening skills, and experience interfacing with a wide variety of key stakeholders; a strong collaborator and team oriented.
Strong work ethic with a positive attitude. Self-starter, quick study, and ability to manage deadlines.
High moral and ethical standards that reflect honesty, integrity, and reliability.
