The Office of the General Counsel at Northeastern University seeks a full-time attorney to provide support for the University and its various colleges and departments in the areas of real estate, commercial contracting, business operations and general transactions. Responsibilities will include the representation of the University on real estate leasing, development, acquisitions, dispositions, permitting, zoning and construction matters. In addition, the attorney will be responsible for the review, drafting, negotiation, and enforcement of a variety of university contracts; and collaboration, advice and guidance across the University regarding the same.
Direct experience relating to one or more of the following is required: real estate leasing, development, acquisitions, dispositions, permitting, zoning and/or construction.
The successful candidate should have a demonstrated interest in and experience with real estate matters and a desire to work on other transactional matters, excellent verbal and written communication skills, a commitment to ethics and integrity, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
The Assistant General Counsel will work closely with and accept direction from senior attorneys in the Office of the General Counsel who specialize in real estate, contracts and transactions.
The Office of the General Counsel currently allows attorneys to work remotely up to two days per week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school
Strong academic and professional record
At least three (3) years of experience focused primarily on real estate matters
Member in good standing of the Massachusetts Bar or eligible to waive into Massachusetts bar within six months of hire
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
Real Estate Matters 40%
Advise and represent the university on real estate leasing, development, financing, acquisitions, dispositions, permitting, zoning and construction matters. Advise and guide university collaborators regarding the same. Supervise and work with outside counsel as necessary.
Other Transactional Matters 40%
Negotiate, draft, review and interpret a broad variety of contracts and other legal instruments memorializing the diverse activities of a large dynamic academic organization. Advise and guide university collaborators regarding the same. Supervise and work with outside counsel as necessary.
Contract Process 10%
Assist with the administration of contract processes for the university. Train, educate and communicate effectively with university community members regarding the same.
Other 10%
Other matters as may be assigned from time to time.
