The District Court Judge-Administrative Judge administers the Nation’s judicial system, adjudicates cases and/or disputes, advises counsel, jury, litigants, and/or court personnel regarding the Nation’s judicial system. Maintains rules and regulations of the Tribal Court. Undertakes all duties and exercises all authority of a judicial officer under the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Law and Order Code. Hears and decides all cases properly before the Court. It is expected that the performance of these duties will be completed on-site at the Nation’s Judicial Center.
Essential Duties:
Ability to decide all criminal and civil cases and/or disputes except regarding elections and government employment.
Ability to review legislative and executive actions for consistency with the Nation’s Constitution and Law and Order Code.
Ability to conduct Court proceedings and issue orders to administer justice.
Ability to interpret and apply legal standards, procedures, and regulations.
Hold Court regularly at a designated time and place.
Undertake all duties and exercise all authority of a judicial officer under the law.
Hear and decide all cases properly brought before the Court.
Establish and maintain rules and regulations of Court procedures.
Maintain and oversee budget of all monies collected in the Court Fund of the judicial system.
Enter all appropriate orders and judgments.
Issue all appropriate warrants and subpoenas.
Keep all records as may be required.
Advise Tribal Council quarterly regarding status of court cases, or as frequently as requested by the Tribal Council.
Perform all duties required for the operation of the District Court and supervises actions of District Court personnel and officers.
Represent the Nation on the Kansas Tribal-State Judicial Forum
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Citizen or Member of an Indian Nation.
Graduate of Accredited Law School.
Admitted to the practice of law by any State.
Kansas State Issued Driver’s License.
Preferred Requirements:
Ten to fifteen years of experience as an attorney.
Five years experience in Indian Law.
Special Requirements:
Ability to serve a four (4) year term.
Demonstrates moral integrity and fairness in business, public and private life.
Excellent decision-making abilities, leadership and management skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Exhibits highest standards of professionalism in work ethics, manner, and appearance reflecting the dignity and integrity of the Nation.
Must not have felony convictions.
May not hold an appointed or elected position with the Nation.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Works cooperatively within the office, Nation, and other agencies as needed.
Must be punctual and dependable in regular attendance.
Initiative: Complicated work with few precedents, performed independently, without supervision.
