Postdoctoral Scholar Climate Action Research and Policy Development
UC Irvine School of Law and the Center for Land, Environment, and Natural Resources are hiring a postdoctoral scholar to assist in developing and implementing community-driven approaches to land use planning to address climate change as part of a new initiative, Integrated and Equitable Climate Action (IECA). The appointment is for two years at 100% time, with a comprehensive benefits package. Continuation beyond initial appointment will be based on performance and availability of funding. Salary is based on UCI salary scales and dependent on qualifications and experience.
With funding from the State of California's Climate Action Research Initiative, IECA builds on UC Irvine School of law's programs devoted to environmental and land use law, community-based environmental justice research, and public dispute resolution, as well as the Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy's expertise in climate policy and land use and transportation planning. It leverages the depth of expertise and experience of attorneys, geospatial analysts, and urban and regional planners, in close partnership with community organizations and agencies. IECA focuses on applied research and policy development with a single goal: to ensure that a growing number of California's 478 municipal governments and 58 counties are at the forefront of state climate policy while assuring compliance with civil rights laws. The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with a diverse team of community leaders, faculty, academic staff, graduate students, and agencies to increase California's capacity for local land use policy innovation to achieve state climate goals while maximizing the co-benefits of climate policy within disadvantaged communities.
The responsibilities of this position include:
Research state climate policy objectives, incentives, and requirements.
Research local and regional climate policy integration barriers, legal tools, and strategies.
Research equity metrics (e.g., state civil rights law, fair housing law, language access) applicable to local and regional climate action.
Explore climate policy/land use integration challenges as applied to general plans, climate action plans, adaptation plans, and other local and regional land use plans.
Propose innovations to local and regional plans, model rules, and guidance to advance state climate policy, environmental review, and multi-jurisdictional coordination.
Collaborate with environmental justice organizations, municipal governments, state agencies, and academics from multiple disciplines, including law, urban planning, public policy, social science, and environmental science to design solutions that mitigate carbon emissions, improve air quality, and address structural as well as geographic and procedural inequities.
Disseminate research outcomes through policy briefs, guides, reports, law journal articles, peer-reviewed articles, presentations, workshops, conferences, and other media.
Mentor graduate and/or undergraduate student researchers.
