The Office of Student Conflict Resolution promotes a safe and scholarly community in which students navigate conflict in a peaceful, socially just, and self-reflexive manner. OSCR offers a spectrum of conflict resolution pathways that are educationally focused, student-driven, community-owned, and restorative in nature, which are adaptable to meet the needs of individuals experiencing conflict.
Job Summary
NOTE: This is a 5-year limited term appointment with the potential to be re-evaluated for an extension.
Promotes student learning and development through outreach, program management, conflict resolution, and supervision. Responsibilities include education and outreach, case management, interdepartmental coordination, Statement review process, training, and administrative supervision of student facilitation staff and/or volunteers. Utilizes specialized knowledge of higher education administration, higher education law, educational and community outreach, student development, conflict resolution, and related content areas to deliver on unit mission.
This position is a key part of OSCR's work to Build Trust, Promote Justice, and Teach Peace on campus. A successful candidate will embody the philosophies and principles of restorative justice and conflict transformation. A successful candidate will also have expertise in working with diverse populations and strong cultural competence.
As a fundamental part of the OSCR team, this position is responsible for competent facilitation of all of OSCR's resolution pathways, with particular emphasis on the expert facilitation of formal conflict resolution pathways and understanding of the policies and procedures within the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Programmatic Leadership (50%)
Manages the Formal Conflict Resolution portfolio which includes reviewing triaging requests for services, delegating and conducting intake meetings, case management, and coordinates and facilitates the resolution of student conflicts using a spectrum resolution pathways (including those referenced in the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Evaluates and prioritizes possible courses of action for current cases, makes decisions on case management, and designs and implements appropriate resolution processes while effectively balancing the interests of all parties in addition to broader community needs.
Manages, monitors and audits student conduct and conflict-resolution cases using standard student conduct case management softwares and utilizing processes articulated in the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Facilitates appropriate educational and restorative interventions in alignment with Student Life and OSCR learning outcomes.
Supervises student staff who facilitate student cases under the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Works with highly sensitive, protected information with discretion and good judgment to maintain student confidentiality and attend to institutional risk-management concerns.
Outreach, Education & Training (25%)
Educates students to increase their ability to reflect on personal values, judgment, and decision-making.
Participates and contributes to unit meetings and continued training efforts for professional and student staff.
Recommends, coordinates, develops and implements educational, procedural and instructional materials for the training of Arbiters in the OSCR formal conflict resolution process under the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
Recommends, coordinates, develops and implements educational, procedural and instructional materials for Appeals Board training.
Utilizes relevant theory, literature, research, and best practices to facilitate conflict resolution across a spectrum of pathways and in the design, development, and implementation of various organizational initiatives.
Communication With Stakeholders and Partners (15%)
Works strategically with key divisional and institutional partners, such as the Dean of Students, Michigan Housing, Office of the General Counsel, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center, Multi-ethnic student affairs, Trotter Multi-cultural center, the Spectrum Center, the International center, the Ginsberg Center, The Department of Public Safety and Security, the Office of Institutional Equity, and various academic and organizational units, to further the peacebuilding mission of OSCR through increasingly collaborative partnerships.
Interacts with parents, family, care-givers, support persons, and attorneys providing support to students in conduct and conflict resolution processes.
Advises members of the University community on OSCR processes, conflict resolution skills and conflict management.
Consults with a broad cross-section of institutional and community stakeholders regarding student conflict issues at large and specific student situations.
Coordinates with the Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) and Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) to support registered student organizations in conflict educational needs as well as through conflict resolution resources.
Provides appropriate referrals for students to all appropriate community resources.
Provides outreach-related programs and activities for the University of Michigan. Advises members of the University community on OSCR processes, conflict resolution skill-building, and conflict management.
Interacts regularly with faculty, staff, students, family, caregivers, and support persons providing support to students within conflict resolution processes.
Consults with community stakeholders regarding student conflict issues at macro and micro levels.
Leadership within Unit & Unit Representation (10%)
Provides leadership and support for OSCR-coordinated or facilitated processes within the community.
Ensures compliance with and education on laws related to the work of OSCR, including FERPA, Clery, and Title IX.
Engages regionally and nationally in opportunities that showcase OSCR's work and the Program Manager's unique expertise in the field of conflict resolution.
Represents OSCR on campus committees, task forces, and search committees, as assigned by OSCR leadership.
Other duties as assigned by OSCR Director or their designee.
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
Experience in student conduct, conflict resolution, or related field.
Advanced degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Social Work, conflict/dispute resolution, peacebuilding, or legal Studies.
Prior student conduct or conflict resolution experience with a focus on social and restorative justice, multipartiality,motivational interviewing and, community building
Content expertise in conflict resolution, student development, community development and engagement.
Ability to develop and implement effective assessment and reporting strategies.
Working conditions
Requires some evening or weekend hours. Position requires working with students through stressful, tense and/or emotionally challenging situations and circumstances, and addressing issues of power, privilege, and oppression. This position is designated by the University of Michigan as an Individual with Reporting Obligations (IRO) under Title IX.Position requires substantial competency in conflict resolution, working with students, parents, attorneys, etc., through challenging/stressful situations and circumstances.

Operations in a virtual environment, in-person environment, and a hybrid environment may be necessary, based on University operations and public health informed practices.
