Description:
Reporting to the Executive Director and Phillip Sassower Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law, the Center Attorney serves Nassau and Suffolk counties and supports the Legal Hand Call-In Center's mission to train community volunteers, who are not lawyers, to provide information, assistance and referrals to those in need and help resolve issues affecting their lives in areas such as housing, family, immigration, employment, and public benefits, and try to prevent problems from turning into legal actions. This position is grant funded and is subject to the availability of grant funds.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Recruits, trains, and manages Center volunteers.
Develops and provides training, community outreach, and educational materials to volunteers.
Provides guidance to volunteers to make referrals to legal services office, to a bar association committee, or other non-profit organization, as needed.
Ensures the accuracy of legal information provided by volunteers.
Provides legal information and drafts court forms.
Supervises the Center Manager and law students.
Updates the Legal Hand Helper platform.
Oversees Center record keeping and reports.
Works closely with the Center's community partners, other legal service providers and practitioners, local Bar Associations, alumni, donors, members of the judiciary, faculty, administrators, and students to further the purpose and impact of the Center.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications:
Juris Doctor degree required.
Admitted to the New York State Bar.
Minimum one year experience practicing law in the public sector.
Experience handling a variety of legal issues including housing, family, immigration, employment, and public benefits.
Excellent analytical, research and writing skills.
Strong interpersonal, communication, time management and organizational skills.
Ability to interact effectively with various outside contacts and constituencies.
Occasional evening and/or weekend hours may be required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with J.D.-level students, e.g., as an advisor, mentor, or instructor preferred.
Background in housing law and consumer law a plus.
Fluency or strong proficiency in Spanish.
Call center or similar experience.
