The Office of University Counsel seeks a Legal Fellow to perform legal duties for one year from August 16, 2025 through August 15, 2026 (approximate). Attorneys in the Office of University Counsel provide legal advice and representation to the University of Illinois, its administrators at all campuses, employees, University Related Organizations, and other agents of the University who seek such advice on behalf of the University arising out of their official University responsibilities. The Legal Fellow works within the Office of University Counsel to assist attorneys and other office personnel on various duties within the full scope of the Office of University Counsel.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform legal research and prepare memoranda.
Assist attorneys with contract review and approvals and engage in other transactional matters, including contract review and approval processes.
Support litigation and other dispute resolution efforts.
Provide assistance with regard to labor and employment matters.
Assist with information requests, including subpoenas and FOIA responses.
Provide informed and expedient advice and counsel related to various compliance and regulatory matters.
Other duties involving the full scope of work of the Office of University Counsel as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Juris Doctorate
Certifications Required: Admission or pending application to Illinois Bar. Applicants must have graduated or be expected to graduate from an ABA- accredited law school between September 1, 2024 and August 15, 2025.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain effective work relationships.
Advanced computer skills using Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as proficiency with an Internet browser (e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or comparable browser).
Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with University and departmental officials/staff.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent problem-solving skills to address difficult, complex issues.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION This is a Full Time academic professional position. The expected start date is 8/16/2025. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position.
The budgeted salary range for the position is $62,000.00 - 70,000.00. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
