The Department of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine, is recruiting a forensic mental health professional for an appointment at the Associate or Professor level for a position as the Director of the Law and Psychiatry Division. The Division consists of more than 20 faculty members, five forensic psychiatry fellows, psychology postdoctoral fellows, and administrative staff. The Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program reports to the Director of Law and Psychiatry.
The successful candidate will direct the activities and further development of the Law and Psychiatry Division, in education and training, forensic evaluations, research, and public policy and will report to the Director of the Connecticut Mental Health Center for State matters and to the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry for academic matters.
The Principal Responsibilities of the position include the following:
Education:
Participating in the forensic psychiatry fellowship and the PGY 2 forensic psychiatry class; supervising visiting residents and medical students; managing forensic journal club; providing instruction to law students and coordinating trial practice experience in the fellowship program and at the law school.
Clinical Services:
Providing risk management and forensic consultation to CMHC and Yale-New Haven Hospital clinicians; and promoting collaborations with DMHAS and private-nonprofit agencies to advance the care of persons with mental illness involved in the criminal justice system.
Research Development:
Promoting and coordinating scholarship within the Division and in collaboration with colleagues external to the Division; and pursuing grant funding and hiring of research staff to support the participation of faculty and trainees in research and scholarship activities.
Promoting collaboration:
Maintaining and promoting continued development of constructive and mutually beneficial collaborations with: the CT Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), especially its Division of Forensic Services; the Yale Law School and its various clinics and its Director of Legal services; other departments of the Yale School of Medicine; other schools of Yale University; and other universities and institutions.
Administration:
Creating and managing revenues from attorney fees, service, consultation, and other contracts; pursuing and managing research and foundation grants; promoting faculty development and reviewing individual faculty goals, performance, and promotion status; coordinating annual visiting Yochelson scholar activities; managing liaisons with the law school, the Veterans Administration, and other partners.
Furthering Program Development:
Extending the application and relevance of forensic psychiatry to our local and academic communities through scholarship; research; new service contracts; and program, policy, and legislative initiatives related to topics such as social justice, access to services, risk management, community re-integration, and forensic recovery. Exploring possibilities such as: contracted external professional training programs/activities and public policy consultations; forensic geriatrics and neuroscience activities; (re-)establishment of collaborations with the CT Department of Children and Families and with Family Court to enhance child/adolescent forensic opportunities for faculty and trainees; and contracts with nursing homes or other facilities, the federal Bureau of Prisons, and the CT Department of Corrections.
