Job Summary
The Associate Director of Development is a skilled fundraising professional with in-depth understanding of the field, who independently performs the full range of responsibilities of a university development officer, analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope, and determines solutions. Using advanced fundraising concepts, plans, organizes, and directs fundraising campaigns which include multiple components. The results of the incumbent's efforts have major impact on overall program goals and assignments and are typically at the 'major gifts' level, including building and managing a well-documented and active portfolio of individuals, planned gifts, corporations, and foundations, and focusses on donors capable of giving $50K or more.
This position plans, schedules, and implements comprehensive fundraising projects and programs. This position is metric-driven and expected to raise gift dollar amounts as established by the Planned Giving unit and aligned with the assigned portfolio. This is a fundraising position focused on the stewarding existing and new donor relationships. Guided by a 'donor centered' approach, the incumbent will strategically solicit gifts using various communication methods, including in person, video, texting, phone, social media and virtual visits. This position requires good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions, and works independently, collaboratively, and collegially as part of a diverse, matrix organization.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Skilled professional frontline fundraising experience, as demonstrated by 2 or more years of professional or volunteer fundraising experience; or equivalent transferrable professional experience including strategic relationship development and portfolio management; or equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Professional knowledge of and experience with development and fundraising techniques, including prospect identification research, evaluation of historic gift data, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and donor stewardship. Experience in major gifts prospect portfolio management as a frontline fundraiser, including knowledge of proven cultivation/solicitation techniques for gifts at all dollar levels with identified success in major gift ($50K+) fundraising.
- Demonstrated success soliciting and securing significant philanthropic gifts, ideally in the planned giving space. Successful track record developing strategic relationships with individuals, corporations, and foundations.
- Expert political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies, including donors and prospects, as well as their legal and financial advisors, in order to develop collaborative working relationships needed to accomplish organizational goals.
- Related experience conceiving, writing and editing fundraising presentations, case statements, proposals and grants for corporations, foundations and individuals for support of program priorities. Experience with planned giving programs is a plus. Expert written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Skilled in organizing and managing both time and workload. Ability to independently support multiple fundraising activities and initiatives essential.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in developing strategic relationships with individual donors and prospective donors, foundations, and other philanthropic organizations. Skills to work effectively with donors and prospects, as well as their legal and financial advisors.
- Progressively responsible professional experience as a development professional in a planned giving program in a university setting and/or higher education experience in an academic health system.
- Knowledge and understanding of complex university/health care group structure in order to effectively coordinate with faculty, directors, leadership, and development colleagues regarding philanthropic support.
- Awareness, knowledge, and skill in applying diversity, equity, and inclusion to one's work. A profound belief in the value of a diverse and safe workforce and a commitment to achieve this goal through collaboration and team building, working cooperatively with a diverse group of department and campus constituencies.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Fundraising in Planned Giving - 85%
- The Associate Director of Development is a metric-driven position and expected to raise gift dollar amounts as established by the Planned Giving team and aligned with the assigned portfolio. The incumbent is expected to ensure that predetermined fundraising goals are met. This position is expected to raise gift dollar amounts as established according to fundraiser specialization at the major gifts level. The incumbent is required to complete a pre-determined number of face-to-face donor visits per year, with minimal supervision. The Associate Director of Development will develop materials, evaluate programs using financial feasibility studies, organizes related programs/events and cultivate, steward, and solicits donor prospects. The incumbent identifies new donor prospects by researching background information, developing materials and marketing plans, and organizing related programs/events, cultivates, stewards, and solicits donor prospects.
- This position requires excellent communication and conduct across all levels of the organization that is collegial, collaborative, and in alignment with the UC Davis Principles of Community. As a communications expert, the incumbent is an excellent listener, with exceptional interpersonal skills and a positive, collaborative work style. As such, the incumbent possesses the skills and ability to draft correspondence, utilize social media, make phone calls, conduct high level in person meetings, and engages all communication channels in order to personally conduct proactive outreach to prospects.
- This position cultivates relationships through purposeful engagement and strategically moves prospects toward gift decisions, which requires the development and presentation of a compelling case for support that is effectively articulated to donors. The incumbent is expected to steward existing and new donor relationships. This position requires good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions, and works independently, collaboratively, and collegially as part of a diverse, matrix organization.
- In collaboration with DEVAR offices, fundraisers are expected to conceive, write, and edit fundraising presentations, proposals and grants for corporations, foundations, and individuals for support of program priorities, in addition to necessary case statements and project-specific documents. The incumbent is expected to prepare reports and documentation related to development efforts and as needed, and is required to utilize the University's database (AIS) to manage donor records in accordance with university and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations policies, operating procedures, and practices. As part of this process, the incumbent is required to comply with and utilizes the services and systems of the UC Davis Development Prospect Management System (PMATS) and the Advance database, and is expected to prepare and submit timely contact reports according to established norms.
- This position will solicit and complete planned gifts to UC Davis. The incumbent is expected to apply knowledge of charitable gift planning techniques, tax law and regulations, and university planned giving opportunities to maximize private support for the campus. This includes applying thorough knowledge of the charitable remainder trusts, pooled income fund program, charitable gift annuity program and related policies and procedures to secure life-income gifts. The incumbent will solicit and complete gifts through bequests, life estate agreements, charitable lead trusts, life insurance policies, retirement plans and other arrangements.
- The incumbent contributes to the administration of life-income gifts including charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities. These responsibilities include working with UC Office of the President, UC Davis Foundation, BNY Mellon and State Street Global Advisors to ensure timely distributions, filing of trust tax returns, distribution of tax statements to beneficiaries, and calculation of subsequent year's payments for unitrusts.
- This position builds and maintains relationships with professional advisors such as attorneys, accountants, and financial advisors in order to encourage gifts to UC Davis. Contributes to efforts around donors in incorporating appropriate gift provisions in estate plans.
- The incumbent analyzes needs and creates strategic and long-range plans for fundraising and other advancement programs and with approval from the relevant authority, is expected to make commitments and decisions regarding program design, development, and procedures.
- In support of meeting strategic goals, the incumbent is expected to create an annual business plan related to performance goals and objectives for prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, and participates in ongoing professional development activities within DEVAR, the unit, the campus and in the profession.
Planned Giving Development Support - 10%
- Provide information and gift proposals to development officer colleagues to assist them in providing donors information to incorporate appropriate gift provisions in their financial and estate plans. Prepare life income gift illustrations for development officer colleagues to share with donors and their advisors, tailoring the gift plan to each donor's requirements.
- Contribute to developing and presenting planned giving information to university staff, alumni, donors, prospects and other external constituencies such as new employee orientation, internal staff workshops.
Marketing - 5%
- Contribute to the design and implementation of a creative and effective planned giving marketing program that will increase planned gifts to UC Davis.
Department Overview
The Planned Giving team assists with administration of life-income gifts including charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities. Responsibilities include working with UC Office of the President, UC Davis Foundation, BNY Mellon and State Street Global Advisors to ensure timely distributions, filing of trust tax returns, distribution of tax statements to beneficiaries, and calculation of subsequent year's payments for unitrusts.
The team builds and maintains relationships with professional advisors such as, attorneys, accountants, and financial advisors in order to encourage gifts to UC Davis. Assist donors in incorporating appropriate gift provisions in estate plans.
Development & Alumni Relations (DEVAR) provides leadership in building enduring public trust, understanding, and support for UC Davis and its mission of teaching, research, and public service. DEVAR provides leadership, coordination and support services to help the university meet its mission of research, teaching and service by building philanthropic support and executing approved fundraising programs that support the university's highest priorities and initiatives.
