Overview: GEICO seeks an accomplished, people-centered Director, Assistant Staff Counsel to lead and elevate its Staff Counsel function in New York/New Jersey. This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for managing managers and senior managers who oversee a large team of attorneys and legal support professionals. The Director is expected to bring strong managerial capability, sound judgment, and an organized, forward-thinking approach to leading litigation operations at scale. This individual will focus on strengthening the management layer, fostering a collaborative and accountable culture, and ensuring consistent delivery of high-quality litigation work across the office. The role requires proactive leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to present solutions rather than problems.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience. The package includes base salary, target bonus, and benefits. $300K to $350K total compensation.

Location: Melville, NY. The role is hybrid with initial in-office presence to establish relationships, assess the team, and ensure alignment with office needs. After onboarding, on-site presence transitions to periodic visits (typically monthly, then quarterly as the office stabilizes).

Experience: Ideal candidates will have substantial experience managing attorneys or litigation teams in environments such as in-house legal departments, government agencies, or law firms where they have effectively led multiple matters and supervised teams. Insurance defense experience is valued but not required; management experience and strategic leadership capability are essential.
