Working under the supervision and direction of the City Solicitor and the Deputy City Solicitor, assists the City Solicitor in all duties set forth in the Cambridge Municipal Code, Chapter 2.26, §§2.26.020 through 2.26.040. Performs a variety of complex, high level administrative, technical, and professional municipal legal work. Along with the City Solicitor and Deputy City Solicitor supervises the Department’s Assistant City Solicitors engaged in active litigation and time-sensitive non-litigation work, such as legal research and drafting contracts, ordinances, memoranda of agreement and other complex documents. Prosecutes and defends civil litigation in state and federal court proceedings and administrative proceedings to which the City is a party. Provides legal advice to the City Manager, Deputy City Manager and department heads and advisory opinions and training to City officials, boards, and commissions. Regularly attends meetings including evening meetings and makes presentations to the City Council and its subcommittees, boards, commissions, and City employees, and from time to time to civic groups and the general public. Assists and acts in the absence of the City Solicitor and the Deputy City Solicitor in managing and supervising the office of the City Solicitor. Provides leadership and direction in the development of short- and long-range plans; coordinates department activities with other city departments and agencies as needed. Assures timely response to approved requests for Law Department services from other City departments and officials.

Must have a JD degree from an accredited law school, be a member of the Massachusetts Bar admitted to practice before state and federal courts and have a minimum of five to seven years’ experience practicing law. Experience working as an attorney in a municipal law department strongly preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of the City of Cambridge’s form of government, ordinances, departmental structure, operations and functioning strongly preferred. Substantial experience in civil litigation required; significant experience in municipal law, employment, zoning, real estate, construction, contracts, personal injury, civil rights and/or environmental law preferred. Demonstrated ability to supervise legal and administrative staff highly desirable. The City of Cambridge’s workforce, like the community it serves, is diverse.
