The New York Times is seeking an experienced legal professional for our Employment Counsel role. This role will have a varied and rewarding practice advising and supporting the human resources function and its initiatives, ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations, partnering on employee relations matters as well as overseeing investigations.
The legal department of The New York Times works throughout the entire organization and partners with teams on the widest range of legal and compliance matters. This newly created position represents the opportunity to join a mission-critical legal team of approximately 18 attorneys and 10 legal staff members. This role will enhance the employment law team and report directly to the Vice President & Assistant General Counsel for employment law.
What You Will Do:
You will provide sound, practical and proactive legal advice to human resources and management on all aspects of employment law, including performance management, discrimination and harassment prevention and workplace investigations, diversity, equity & inclusion initiatives, COVID-19 protocols, leaves of absence and accommodations, wage and hour issues, contingent workers, compensation, pay equity, terminations and restructuring
Work with Human Resources to create and maintain appropriate policies, procedures and best practices for our global workforce
Prepare and conduct training for human resources and management
Remain current on legal decisions, statutory changes and other developments and provide advice and training
Draft employment, separation and other agreements and forms
Handle potential litigation, administrative charges, and manage employment litigation matters
Help with complex and sensitive projects, as assigned
Perform all responsibilities in a manner consistent with our Mission and Values
Who You Are:
Able to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with clients and colleagues
Able to weigh risks against operational needs to develop practical recommendations, including risk mitigation strategies, and provide sound legal advice
Extraordinary analytical and problem-solving skills combined with attention to detail
Strong organizational and project management skills and the ability to handle high volume and balance competing demands
Able to perform at a high level of professional integrity with the discretion, tact and ability to maintain confidentiality
Basic Qualifications:
8 years of experience practicing employment law
Juris Doctor is required and must be a member of the New York Bar
Preferred Qualifications:
2+ years of in-house experience
Experience advising on international employment law, immigration and/or benefits issues
